Notes from Mennonite Church USA Convention in Pittsburgh

Saturday, July 2
Albuquerque, Beth-El, Boulder, East Holbrook, Emmanuel, Ft. Collins, Mountain Community, and Peace Mennonite Community meet us at our church building and the 38 of us play get-to-know-you games, eat pizza, and hang out from 9pm till our bus arrives early in the morning.  A lot of light rain while we travel.

Sunday, July 3
We board the bus around 4:30am and the start the trek to Pittsburgh.  Way too much fast food!  And our first food stop is filled with other 4th of July travelers.  We switch to our second driver around a late lunch time.

Monday, July 4
We switch to our third bus driver in the middle of the night and we arrive in Pittsburgh on the bus around 9:30am.  Weather isn't too hot, and clouds keep building above us.  We check-in to half of our rooms and find a way to all take showers.  Then it's off to find lunch and then go to the Pirates baseball game before worship.  Glennon Heights, El Centro (Caleb - a sponsor) and the rest of our crew fly into Pittsburgh around dinner time, making the Mountain States Youth/Sponsor number around 46 from 11 different churches!

Evening Worship July 4th - Shane Hipps (who works with Rob Bell and occasionally Peter Rollins) talked about making peace amidst our desires for justice and for purity/righteousness.  Then we supposedly went to sleep around midnight :-)

Tuesday, July 5
July 5th has been a full day.  Morning worship speaker was Shane Hipps again, and he talked about the unique value and worth every single person has.  Then we went did our Servant Project cleaning up a hillside where people have been dumping random garbage by the Zoo.  Muddy, muddy jeans!  Now it's time to shower and head to dinner and evening worship featuring the drama guru Ted!

Wednesday, July 6
Glenda Kauffman alerted the church office about the following article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Click here to view article.

Wow - so we're famous!  Looks like Brennen, Nate, Kate, and Beth made it on the cover of the Pitt newspaper...  Need I say more on what that's done for our Mountain States pride this July 6th?  Read the article... :-)  And yesterday we celebrated Ellen's Birthday - fun singing to her in the lunch hall instigated by her brother Brett. - Tory

Friday, July 8
Thursday night was a free night.  Many of us attended the trash fashion show, the hymn sing, and then a few of us attended the Pink Menno Coffee House.

Friday we're trying to stay energetic.  This afternoon some of us utilized tickets that the Zoo gave us for our work on Tuesday (that made us "famous"), and others walked around the scary Pittsburgh Plate Glass company buildings and a few of the bridges and city parks.

We keep gathering quotes and pictures and stories to share during our Mystery Meal (open to everyone) on the 16th and then an abbreviated version during the worship service on the 17th :-)

Worship ended with an energetic worship session!  Now we are off to our last few hours of fun, including the pool and a couple of convention related Coffee Houses.  Tomorrow a few of us fly home, while the majority of us board the bus early for Cedar Point's roller coasters to make sure we have NO energy left by the time we roll in late Sunday night!  Pray for our recuperation during worship Sunday :-)  Thanks for your support - Tory and the MYF and our amazing Sponsors!
